Top 5 Care Guide for Pet Parrots
For some exotic pet enthusiasts parrots are more than just pets or ornaments at home. They may not be as cuddly and furry as cats and dogs, but they are as intelligent, interactive and affectionate. If properly taken cared of, parrots may live from 25-75 years. Here are top 5 things to remember in keeping your pet healthy and happy.
1. Study and research about the parrot’s nutritional needs, habitat requirements and animal behavior. There are plenty of literatures available on exotic pets. Read books, magazines, internet articles and web journals. If possible, talk to breeders, exotic pet experts and avian doctors. You may also join bird clubs and watch bird shows to get an idea of what kinds of tricks and behavior your pet may have.

2. Make your home parrot friendly. Common household appliances can be dangerous for your pets and may potentially kill them. Coated, non-stick cookware give off fumes that are toxic to birds. Keep them away from shards of glass, small plastic items and knives.
3. Provide your pet with a balanced diet. Feeding your parrot with pellets and nuts may not be enough. Supplement their meals with fresh food such as apples, berries, broccoli, corn, peas, kales and other leafy green vegetables and fruits. However, avoid avocados, chocolates, caffeine and greasy, high cholesterol food.
4. Ideal room temperature for your bird is between mid-fifties to eighties. Protect the bird from drafts, especially on cold winter nights. Clean the bird cage often. Change the drinking water and wash the feeding bowls with clean, warm water.
5. Before purchasing your exotic pet, find out if there is an avian doctor available near you. Find out how you can properly take care of your new pet. Schedule your exotic bird for regular check-ups.
