Parrot Care Sheet

Parrot Care Sheet
Parrots are intelligent, interactive and social pets. They need care and attention as much as your pet cat or dog. It is important to devote some time in feeding, tending and even training your bird. They may look ornamental with their bright plumage, but they are more than just decorations at your home. There are plenty of materials available discussing your pet parrot’s nutritional need and habitat requirements. Read and study them. Here is a care sheet as basic guide for your feathered friend.

Diet: You can feed your parrot with pellets bought at the pet store. However, you may also supplement their meals with fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts. They can be fed with bananas, apples, berries, papaya, mango, orange, melon, whole wheat bread, collard greens, grains, corns, peas, spinach, broccoli and pears. However, stay away from avocados, chocolate, caffeine, sunflower seeds and fatty foods. Divide their diet into three bowls of fresh water, pellets and fresh food.
Housing: Invest on the biggest cage you can afford. A big cage may be too large for one bird, but, who knows, you may end up buying more. The cage is big enough if your pet can flap his/her wings without hitting the sides. The cage should be tightly welded together and the bars should be narrow to prevent escape. Cages with powder-coated finish tend to rust less. Build perches of different heights and diameters. Also consider leaving enough space for toys.
Grooming: Parrots also need baths. The easiest would be to give them a bird bath in a shallow pan of water. You may also bathe them by spraying or misting them with water with a spray bottle. Nails should be clipped regularly. Clean their cages and food bowls with warm water.
Toys: Parrots are as curious as cats and dogs. In order to keep them happy and to satisfy this innate curiosity, give them toys. Cardboards, paper towel rolls, magazine pages and books can keep them occupied for long hours.
