Even the most ordinary household items can become dangerous to your pet parrot. Before purchasing your pet, consult an expert regarding potential risks. Of course, you cannot put away or discontinue using all appliances or tools that are dangerous to your pets. However, you can at least practice caution. Furthermore, it would give you an idea of the ideal place for setting up your birdcage.
Parrots like any other birds like looking outside the window. However, drafts under the windows or doors, especially on cold nights are causes for concern. Seal drafts as closely as possible or keep them away from windows and doors during cold weather. Windows, mirrors and ceiling fans present danger to birds that might fly into them. Your parrot may bump against a closed window or fly out of an open one. They also get nervous from any moving thing above. They may also get tangled up with pieces of cord lying around the floor. Give your new pet some time to get used to cats and dogs. They may get along eventually, but it is still best to keep them out of reach of bigger pets.
Chemicals are also dangerous to your pet parrots. Hairsprays, nail polish remover and lead are poisonous. They may also inhale fumes from coated, non-stick pans or self-cleaning ovens. Keep them out of the kitchen when using these appliances. Cigarette smokes also present potential risk as well as carbon monoxide. Do not keep the bird cage near the garage, especially if you start your car near an open door often. Accommodate your pet as much as possible. Eventually, it will become instinctive for you to look for potential dangers once you see your intelligent and affectionate parrot as part of the family.
