Lories and Lorikeets

Taking Care of Your Pet Lories and Lorikeets
Lories and lorikeets have different feeding requirements than other parrot species. They feed on nectars in the wild and their diet in captivity must mimic their natural diet closely. Special formulas made especially for lories and lorikeets are available in the pet store. They can be bought as nectars or powders. You may also feed them with fresh foods and vegetables flavored with apple sauce. These vegetables and fruits are kales, peas, squash, bell pepper, broccoli, apples cantaloupe, papaya, mango, figs, pineapple, carrots, mango and grapes. If your parrot prefers it, you may finely chop or puree fresh vegetables and fruits to make it more appealing. Some bird owners feed their parrots with edible flowers such as marigolds, dandelions, nasturtiums, hibiscus and pansies.

Since their natural diet is in liquid form, some pet owners fail to feed them with fresh water. However, like any living form, fresh water is an important part of their diet. Do not forget to feed them with fresh, bacteria free, water daily. Because of their diet, lories and lorikeets tend to become messy. Clean your pet parrot’s cage as often as possible. Wash away all uneaten bits of fruits and vegetables. These bits of food tend to become moldy and may be eaten by your pet. Purchase acrylic cages for your pet, if possible. Acrylic cages have air holes and are easier to clean. Wash feeding dish daily and change their water as often as possible.
Lastly, like any other parrots lories and lorikeets require attention. They are naturally affectionate birds and like to groom their owners. Devote some time and attention in tending to your pet. If you fail to give them any attention, they may become shy of handling.
